Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I learned this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most formidable hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re reading this as an aspiring student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what lesson did I take away? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events that will assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There are so many diverse individuals across the program and university; you are sure to find people who resonate with you.

An additional challenge I encountered was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable transition from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel as if you aren’t measuring up. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation as you. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are a few others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are excellent. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support being offered. You can never have an excess of help!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated by the vast array of support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
