Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your major worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a leap at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that feeling, one being the assurance that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, reach out for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took a significant one at the year’s onset by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support mechanisms provided by faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
