Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse range of people in the program and at the university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and grappling with the difficulty of the material. There was certainly an increase in intensity from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can virtually assure you that others find it confusing too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really access the pastoral support until the tail end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this segment of university life is to capitalize on the assistance offered to you. You can never receive too much!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the multitude of support resources readily available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
