By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown wasn’t a situation my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?
One of the initial and most overwhelming challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating facets of initiating university life, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may resonate as one of your top worries. On my move-in day, a few days shy of the start of term, I spent the entirety of the day tucked away in my room, daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what lesson did I glean? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plentiful opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you bond with others. I also realized that above all, you should be yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others engaging in study and feel as though you don’t measure up. A few approaches helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something confusing, I can nearly assure you that others feel the same way. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace during the first year. Ask for support from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – at the beginning of the year, I indeed took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build relationships with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to make the most of the resources available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
Overall, this year has instilled in me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost entirely baseless and can be mitigated by the numerous support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
