Months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Engaging in something unfamiliar was not characteristic of my formerly shy and withdrawn personality. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be your greatest concern. On my inaugural day of settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or apprehensive, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in meeting others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some instances, a more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being in this kind of environment can test your self-esteem; you may notice others studying vigorously and feel less capable. What helped me was reminding myself that everyone shares this experience. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty within Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They resonate with our experiences and keep open lines of communication about our concerns. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps before – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various methods to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to leverage the support provided. You can never have too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the available support from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have a good time despite stresses like exams and deadlines.
