Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved persona was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and fun! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most challenging facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your foremost worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively say I have formed some fantastic friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what have I taken away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse crowd throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Navigating such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others diligently studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear, there are probably others who share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to excel and understand the challenges that students encounter. They relate to our struggles and maintain open communication throughout the year concerning any issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier—I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My primary lesson is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unmerited and can be alleviated with the myriad support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find joy in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
