Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
Authored by Dawson La, MEng Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a hint of apprehension as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. As someone who has always been rather shy and introverted, plunging into university life appeared quite intimidating. Now, in hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, academic hurdles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. This is a common concern for many newcomers, and I was certainly no exception. On the day I relocated to my accommodation—just days prior to the start of term—I found myself spending the majority of the day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have come to feel like a second family to me here at Imperial. What made the difference? Simply initiating small conversations with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was.

The essential takeaway? Make that initial move. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. And above all, be yourself. With such a diverse student populace, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

From an academic perspective, the shift from A-levels to university-level coursework represented another significant challenge. The leap in workload and complexity—particularly between the first and second terms—was notable. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your capabilities when you observe others seemingly navigating everything with grace. However, one of the most crucial lessons I gleaned was that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are facing the same difficulties. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—from peers or from staff. Learning to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been extraordinary. They genuinely prioritize our well-being and success, keeping communication channels open throughout the year. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I did take a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This role enabled me to connect with staff members and gain a clearer understanding of the support systems available. Cultivating relationships with staff is one of the best moves you can make—it paves the way for easier help-seeking when needed.

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings I experienced at the outset were not only common but also manageable. With the right support from fellow students and staff, those concerns gradually diminished. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to juggle academic pressures with moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I look forward, I feel more assured and enthusiastic about what lies ahead. If you are about to embark on your university adventure, remember that feeling uncertain is perfectly normal—but also recognize that you will grow more than you ever envisioned.
