Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a considerable amount of apprehension. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such an entirely new and unfamiliar setting felt intimidating. Now that I reflect on the academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was forging friendships. It’s a common concern for many newcomers, and I was no different. On the day I moved into my accommodation—just days before the term commenced—I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Through shared moments in my coursework and around campus, I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial. The secret? Taking that initial step and engaging in small conversations with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. My primary lesson: be true to yourself. With such a diverse student population, you are likely to find individuals you resonate with.

Another significant adjustment was the academic workload. The transition from A-levels to university-level material was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your capabilities when observing others studying with confidence. However, I realized that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, likelihood is that others are too. The most crucial skill I gained during my first year was the ability to seek help—whether from peers or instructors. Don’t hesitate to reach out; it truly makes a difference.

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Department of Materials has been extraordinary. They genuinely prioritize students’ welfare and academic achievements. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to listen and assist. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One initiative I did undertake early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members and gain a deeper understanding of the support systems available. Establishing those connections was one of the most fulfilling aspects of my year, and I urge every student to interact with staff whenever possible. The support is readily available—make use of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxieties and uncertainties I faced at the beginning were typical, but not enduring. With time, support, and a willingness to venture beyond my comfort zone, I’ve become more self-assured and capable. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life—even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines—is achievable.
