Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering Studies

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Just ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always leaned towards being shy and reserved, the prospect of plunging into university life felt extremely intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained—and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant and daunting hurdles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my first day in student housing tucked away in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—people who feel like family. It all commenced with brief exchanges with others who were equally new and apprehensive.

The primary takeaway? Make that leap early. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections with others. And most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

Another significant change was the academic demands and the level of challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or to compare yourself to peers who seem to be managing better. However, one thing that aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping something, it’s likely others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—either from your fellow students or from faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire in your first year.

On the topic of support, the staff in the Department of Materials are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ well-being and success, and they keep communication open throughout the entire year. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had reached out earlier. Early in the year, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge strong connections with staff. Familiarizing yourself with those who are there to assist you can lead to significant advantages, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities.

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious emotions I experienced at the outset were natural—but often unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to balance academic pressures with enjoyment, and how to fully embrace the university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous. Nonetheless, understand that with time, support, and a readiness to step beyond your comfort zone, you’ll grow in ways you never thought possible.
