Reflecting on October 2022, I recall feeling anxious, uncertain, and slightly overwhelmed as I geared up to embark on my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. As an individual who has always been rather shy and introverted, plunging into university life seemed quite intimidating. Fast forward to nearly a year later, and I can look back on a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current situation?

One significant hurdle I encountered initially was forging friendships. For numerous new students, this can prove to be one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university. I must confess, on the day I moved into my accommodation—just days prior to the start of term—I spent the majority of it in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have come to feel like a second family to me. What I’ve discovered is that taking that initial step, however small, is crucial. Whether it’s initiating a chat or joining an ice-breaker event, putting yourself out there truly makes a difference. And above all, be authentic—Imperial boasts a diverse community, and there’s a spot for everyone.

Another significant transition was the academic workload. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term presented even more trials. It’s easy to feel as though you’re falling behind when you observe others engrossed in their studies. However, one thing that assisted me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek help—be it from your classmates or the academic staff. Learning to ask for support is among the most valuable skills you can hone during your first year.

On the topic of support, I can’t emphasize enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely aspire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and communication. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the academic year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I decided to take a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position provided me with the chance to connect with staff and gain a better understanding of the support structures in place. Cultivating relationships with staff members is incredibly advantageous, and I strongly encourage getting involved in any manner you can.

All in all, this year has shown me that the worries and anxieties I carried before starting university were often unfounded. With effective support—from both staff and fellow students—those jitters can be alleviated. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and enjoying university life is indeed possible, even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.
