**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer at Imperial College London. For an individual who has always been somewhat introverted, venturing into uncharted territory felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve evolved and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your main worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can assuredly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life—friends who feel like an extended family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I discover? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect. Most importantly, just be yourself. With various personalities and backgrounds at university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the demands and complexities of university-level coursework was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and assuming they’re excelling.

What aided me during those moments of doubt was the reminder that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to listen to our concerns.

Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the most advantageous choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My largest takeaway? Utilize the available support systems—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There are countless resources and individuals ready to assist you, be they staff or fellow students.

This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone, even when circumstances feel overwhelming. It has also taught me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with joyful and fun experiences.

As I look ahead, I’m eager to discover what the next phase of my university adventure will bring. To anyone about to start their journey at Imperial, remember: take that leap, seek help, and fully embrace the experience.
