Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a good amount of fear. I was poised to embark on my first year of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the idea of diving deeply into university life felt daunting—especially for someone like me, who had always been rather reserved and shy. Now, reflecting on that inaugural academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the most significant and daunting hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might be a primary concern for you as well. I remember my first day in student housing—the semester hadn’t even commenced, and I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can sincerely say I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, within my course and beyond. It all began with a few straightforward conversations with individuals who were just as new and uncertain as I was.
The essential lesson? Take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel ready, there will be numerous chances—icebreakers, events, and communal experiences—that facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. Imperial is home to individuals from diverse backgrounds, and you’re sure to find others who align with your interests and values.
Another considerable adjustment was the academic demands and the intricacies of the course material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to pit yourself against others who seem to be managing better. But a realization that truly assisted me was that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the faculty. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can hone in your first year.
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about the success and well-being of the students, and they remain receptive to feedback and dialogue. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. One initiative I did undertake early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a better understanding of the support mechanisms in place. Nurturing those relationships has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my year, and I would urge anyone to engage in similar opportunities.
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension and doubts I experienced at the outset were natural—but also that they were often unfounded. With the backing of friends, faculty, and the broader university community, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines while enjoying my time at university.
If you’re about to embark on your own journey at Imperial, understand this: it’s perfectly fine to feel anxious. But take those initial steps, reach out, and embrace the adventure. You may very well surprise yourself with how far you can go.
