Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and doubt as I geared up to embark on my first year of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. As an individual who had always been quiet and introverted, stepping into an entirely new setting felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I now see a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the start was forming friendships. It’s a concern that plagues many new students, and I was no different. On the day I moved into my accommodation—just a few days before the term commenced—I isolated myself in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to this moment, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, both within my course and beyond. What made the difference? Simply initiating casual conversations with peers who were just as fresh and anxious as I was. My key takeaway: take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there are numerous icebreakers and events tailored to help you connect with others. Above all, be genuine. With such a diverse cohort, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
Another considerable adjustment was grappling with the academic demands and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel as though you’re trailing behind when you observe others diligently studying or grasping concepts at a quicker pace. However, what provided me solace was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulties with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to reach out for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They sincerely care about our achievements and well-being, and they keep communication channels open throughout the year. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One proactive step I took at the outset was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much.
Overall, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during the commencement of university was frequently unfounded. Thanks to the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying the university experience.
