Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and quite a bit of apprehension about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a freshman in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something I was accustomed to. However, now that I reflect on the past academic year, I perceive a journey rich with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current standing?
One of the most significant and intimidating hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this can be among the most daunting aspects of embarking on university life. I recall my first day in student accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of the term—when I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, both within my program and throughout the university. It turns out that all it took was a bit of small talk with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What lesson did I take from this? That initiating the first move is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous icebreakers and activities designed to connect you with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being true to yourself is the best approach. With such a diverse student populace, you’re bound to encounter others who share your passions and values.
Another significant change was adapting to the academic demands and the intricacy of the course material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more intense. It’s easy to feel daunted or to second-guess yourself when observing others seemingly flourish. Nevertheless, one of the most crucial lessons I gained was that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are experiencing the same. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or from the faculty. In fact, learning to request help might be the single most crucial skill you cultivate in your first year.
Regarding the faculty, the support from the Materials department has been outstanding. The instructors and support personnel genuinely desire for students to thrive, and they understand the hurdles we face. They’re approachable, compassionate, and always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought help sooner. One bold move I made early on was taking on the role of a Year Wellbeing Representative. This position allowed me to engage with staff on a deeper level, and that connection turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey.
Overall, this year has taught me that the anxiety and uncertainties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were natural, yet not insurmountable. With the backing of friends, faculty, and the broader university community, I learned that I’m never truly alone. I also discovered how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also carving out moments for enjoyment and relaxation.
As I look forward, I feel more assured, more connected, and more enthusiastic about what lies ahead.
