Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a hint of fear as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. I had never been one to leap into new experiences, especially as someone who has always leaned towards being more reserved. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I see a path filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered early on was forging friendships. For many newcomers, this can be one of the most intimidating aspects of starting university. I recall spending my initial day in student housing retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve made some incredible friends—individuals who feel like a second family. What changed? I took a leap and initiated small conversations with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was. My most important takeaway? Don’t hesitate to make that first move. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, be yourself—Imperial boasts a diverse student body, and you’re sure to find your group.
Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the academic demands. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was challenging, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or to compare yourself to peers who appear to be navigating it all with ease. But here’s the reality: everyone is figuring things out along the way. If you’re grappling with a concept, others likely are too. The key lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. It’s one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.
Speaking of support, I can’t emphasize enough how wonderful the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about our achievements and well-being. Throughout the year, they kept open communication channels and were always willing to address student issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. One of the wisest decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative—it allowed me to foster relationships with staff and gain a clearer understanding of the support frameworks available. If you have the opportunity to engage or connect with staff, seize it. You’ll be grateful you did.
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings I encountered at the beginning were completely natural—but also that they didn’t have to hold me back. With the backing of friends, staff, and the wider university community, I’ve learned to handle stress, embrace challenges, and savor the journey. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone on this path.
