Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Reflecting on October 2022, I recall feeling anxious, uncertain, and overwhelmed as I got ready to embark on my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. Being naturally shy and reserved, entering such a significant life transition seemed intimidating. Yet now, almost a year later, I can look back on a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I still vividly remember my first day in student housing, retreating to my room, feeling too apprehensive to mingle with anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve found some of the best friends I could ask for—people who have become like a second family. What made the difference? I took a risk and initiated small chats with others who were equally anxious. The crucial takeaway here: dare to take that step at the outset. Even if the timing doesn’t feel right, countless ice-breakers and events are available to assist in forging connections. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second brought additional difficulties. It’s all too easy to feel like you’re lagging when observing others studying with ease, but remember: everyone is navigating their own path. If you’re having trouble grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance—from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

On the topic of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The professors and support teams genuinely prioritize our success and well-being. They are approachable, compassionate, and receptive to feedback. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff and gain insight into the department’s dynamics. There are numerous opportunities to engage and connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation: leverage the support systems around you—more help is always a good thing.

In summary, this year has shown me that those initial anxieties are entirely normal—and, more importantly, manageable. With the backing of classmates, faculty, and the broader university network, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle academic pressures alongside enjoyment, even during exam periods.

Imperial has challenged me, provided support, and facilitated my growth in ways I never anticipated. I eagerly look forward to what the next chapter will hold.
