Reflecting on my experience from October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and apprehension about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and as someone who tends to be a bit reticent, engaging in such a fresh and unfamiliar environment felt daunting. Now, with the completion of an entire academic year, I can assert that this journey has been one of personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the primary hurdles I encountered at the beginning was forging friendships. For numerous newcomers, this represents one of the most daunting aspects of starting university. I recall spending my initial day in student housing confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals I now consider as my second family. It all commenced with some casual conversation and the intent to connect with others who were just as new and hesitant as I was. The vital takeaway? Make that initial move. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breaking activities and social events to assist you in easing into the environment. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse student demographic, you are sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

Academically, transitioning from A-levels to university-level coursework represented another significant challenge. The leap in workload and complexity—particularly from the first to the second term—was considerable. It’s easy to get caught in the comparison trap and feel as though you’re falling behind. However, one of the most crucial lessons I grasped was that everyone navigates similar struggles. If you find difficulties in grasping a concept, rest assured that many others are likely experiencing the same challenge. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—from classmates, tutors, or professors. Learning to reach out for help is among the most essential skills you can acquire during your first year.

On the topic of support, I cannot emphasize enough the positive impact of the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely prioritize student well-being and success, ensuring transparent communication throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral assistance available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the finest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a deeper insight into the resources accessible to students. Cultivating relationships with staff is extremely important, and there are numerous ways to achieve this—don’t hesitate to engage.

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during the year—was largely unfounded. With the appropriate support from both peers and staff, those emotions can be effectively managed and conquered. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with leisure and enjoyment.
