Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I ventured into the unknown—anxious, unsure, and brimming with inquiries about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my first year of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new experience was a significant leap. Reflecting back, I can recognize the extent of my personal growth. This past academic year has brought about considerable self-development, hurdles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the most daunting challenges I confronted early on was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student, you might share similar concerns. I still recall my initial day in student accommodation—I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to the present, and I can sincerely say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. These relationships have turned into a surrogate family for me. What changed? Simply taking that initial step—initiating a conversation, participating in ice-breaker events, and being receptive to meeting new individuals. The essential lesson? Be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
Another significant shift was the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the change from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you witness others seemingly managing everything effortlessly. But here’s the insight that aided me: remembering that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or your instructors. Learning to request support is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate during your first year.
On the topic of support, I can’t express enough how commendable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely prioritize our success and well-being. They comprehend the obstacles students encounter and are consistently receptive to feedback and dialogue. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This role allowed me to establish strong relationships with staff and gain deeper insights into the support systems available. If you have the opportunity to connect with staff—embrace it! It’s immensely fulfilling.
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that the apprehensions and fears I harbored at the start were natural, albeit often unwarranted. With the right backing—from both staff and fellow students—those emotions became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to relish university life even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
