Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what the future had in store. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial, and as someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into such a significant new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize a journey that was rich in growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you may share these same worries. On the day I settled into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the term’s commencement—I was so anxious that I spent the whole day confined to my room, too frightened to venture out and socialize. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both in my course and throughout the university. Imperial has become a second family for me, beginning with simple conversations with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.

The most significant takeaway? Make that initial move. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more pronounced jump from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel like you’re lagging when you observe others studying rigorously, but it’s crucial to remember that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, there’s a good chance others are as well. The best action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

Regarding staff, the backing from the Materials department has been exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely aspire for your success and are acutely aware of the hurdles students encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always willing to assist. Although I didn’t utilize the pastoral support services until later in the academic cycle, I wish I had reached out earlier.

In the beginning, I took a bold step and became a Year Wellbeing Representative, which allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members—a connection that turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous paths to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of all the available support—you can never have too much.

In summary, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxieties and trepidations I experienced before and during university were frequently unfounded. With the remarkable support from staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I discovered how to navigate the demands of exams and deadlines while also enjoying my university experience.
