Certainly! Here’s a rephrased version of the article:

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and quiet, embarking on such a significant new chapter was daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize it has been brimming with personal development, trials, and an abundance of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day in the halls, secluding myself in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here — companions who feel like a second family. What contributed to this? Simply taking small initiatives to engage in conversations with individuals who were equally anxious as me. My key takeaway: take that initial step early on. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breakers and events are tailored to facilitate connections. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals with whom you resonate.

Another significant transition was managing the academic demands and the increase in difficulty. The shift from A-levels was apparent — and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or question your own abilities while observing peers studying diligently. However, one thing that benefited me was the understanding that we all share similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, there’s a good possibility that others are as well. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance — from classmates, lecturers, or tutors. Developing the ability to reach out for help is among the most invaluable skills you can acquire in your first year.

On the topic of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly wish to see you thrive and are keenly aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and were always eager to listen. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. Initially, I took the initiative to become a Year Well-being Representative, which provided me with the opportunity to collaborate closely with staff members — an experience I found immensely fulfilling. Cultivating these connections and leveraging the available support is one of the best actions you can undertake for yourself at university.

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxieties and apprehensions I experienced — both prior to and during my time at university — were often baseless. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I realized that I was never genuinely on my own. Most importantly, I acquired the ability to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with having a good time and cherishing the experience.
