Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a good amount of fear. I was on the cusp of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), and diving into something so unfamiliar was a significant step outside my comfort zone. Having always been somewhat shy and reserved, this was quite a leap. Reflecting on it now, I realize that this year has been filled with growth, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what lessons have I taken from this experience—and where do I stand now?

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might already be on your mind. I recall my first day moving into my accommodation—I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. However, fast forward to today, and I can sincerely say I’ve formed some of the best friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, initiated by a few simple conversations with others who were just as nervous as I was.

The crucial lesson? Take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and events geared toward helping you connect with others. And above all—just be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and vibe.

Another significant adjustment was the academic workload. The transition from A-levels to university was clear—and the jump from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your abilities when it seems like everyone around you is managing effortlessly. But here’s what aided me: remembering that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Honestly, learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

This brings me to another crucial point—the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want to see us thrive and comprehend the obstacles we encounter. They are approachable, understanding, and always receptive to feedback. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had sought it out sooner. One bold move I made early on was becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to collaborate closely with the staff. Establishing those relationships has been among the most fulfilling aspects of my experience. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can profoundly impact your journey.

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was frequently baseless. With the backing of peers and staff, those worries became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never entirely on my own, and it’s achievable to embrace university life, even when facing looming exams and deadlines.
