Reflecting on October 2022, I can recall feeling anxious, unsure, and somewhat overwhelmed as I got ready to embark on my first year of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Being a person who has always been a bit introverted, jumping into university life seemed intimidating. However, now, ten months later, I can look back on a year filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the major challenges I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. It’s a common concern for many newcomers, and I was no different. I vividly remember my first day in student accommodation—I spent most of it confined to my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. But fast forward to today, and I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become like a second family to me. What was beneficial? Simply initiating small talks with others who were equally new and uncertain like myself. My key takeaway: take that initial step, even if it feels awkward. Numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings are available to help you connect. And above all, remain true to yourself. With a diverse student body, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
Another difficulty was acclimating to the academic demands. The shift from A-levels to university-level education was substantial—and the transition from the first to second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to feel left behind when witnessing others immersed in their studies, but I discovered that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, others likely are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—from peers, tutors, or professors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
Regarding support, the staff in the Materials department have been truly fantastic. They genuinely prioritize our success and well-being, and they are always receptive to our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not reaching out sooner. Early on, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish connections with the staff, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation: make the most of the support systems provided—they exist for a purpose.
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during the university’s beginning was normal—but also manageable. With the right support and attitude, I learned how to juggle academic demands while enjoying life and how to flourish in a new setting. Most importantly, I realized that I was never truly alone.
