Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and a considerable amount of fear. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the prospect of immersing myself in this new phase was intimidating—especially for someone who had always been somewhat introverted. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the most formidable and anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered early in the process was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a concern for you. I vividly recall my initial day in student housing—just a few days ahead of the term starting—I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. But fast forward to the present, and I can genuinely state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with brief exchanges with others who were equally new and unsure.
What does this teach us? That taking that initial plunge—regardless of discomfort—is invaluable. You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. There are numerous ice-breaking initiatives and activities aimed at helping you connect with others. And above all, be genuine. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals you resonate with.
Another significant adjustment was the academic demands and level of complexity. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more rigorous. It can be easy to feel daunted or to compare yourself to peers who appear to be managing everything effortlessly. However, what helped me was keeping in mind that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your peers or faculty members. Mastering the skill of asking for help is one of the most crucial abilities you can hone in your first year.
Speaking of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors truly want you to thrive, and they comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They’re accessible, understanding, and maintain open communication throughout the academic year. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had utilized it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff more deeply, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless opportunities to connect with those who educate and assist you—and engaging in these interactions can greatly enhance your university experience.
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the fears and apprehensions I held—both prior to and throughout university—were often baseless. With the extensive support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to blend diligent work with enjoyment, even during tense periods such as exams and submission deadlines.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m proud of my progress—and eager for what the future holds.
