In October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and quite a bit of fear. As I was about to embark on my first year of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, the idea of plunging into such a new and unfamiliar setting was intimidating—especially for someone who had always been rather shy and reserved. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize the significant growth I’ve experienced. It has been a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments. So, what lessons have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was establishing friendships. For a lot of new students, this can turn out to be one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of commencing university life. I recall my first full day in student accommodation, where I spent most of the time tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking at my situation today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who feel like a second family. What changed? It all began with a little small talk and the realization that everyone else was in a similar position. My suggestion? Take that leap early on. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, there will be numerous opportunities—ice-breakers, events, and shared moments—to connect with others. Above all, be yourself. Given the diverse student population, you’re sure to find individuals you resonate with.

Another significant adjustment was the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university studies was major, and moving from the first to the second term presented an even steeper learning curve. It’s common to feel daunted or to compare yourself to others and think you’re lagging behind. However, one of the most valuable insights I gained was that everyone faces challenges at some point. If you’re feeling confused or stuck, chances are others are experiencing the same thing. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department have been nothing short of amazing. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback and conversation. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members and gain a better understanding of the resources offered to students. If you have the chance to engage with staff—whether through roles, office hours, or events—do so. The support is available, and it can significantly impact your experience.

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt before and during the beginning of university was normal—but often unnecessary. With the right kind of support and a positive mindset, those fears can be conquered. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and that it’s absolutely possible to enjoy university life while navigating the pressures of exams and deadlines.
