Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a considerable amount of fear. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the idea of immersing myself in something so new and unfamiliar was intimidating for someone like me—naturally shy and reserved. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I can confidently state it has been a journey of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the most significant and daunting obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. I recall spending my entire first day in student accommodation hiding in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I’ve connected with some of the best friends I’ve ever had—individuals who feel like a second family. It all commenced with a bit of casual conversation and the realization that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings. My key takeaway? Take that initial step. Even if you’re not yet prepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and events available to facilitate connections with others. And above all, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re certain to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.
Another considerable adjustment was the academic demands. The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework was substantial, and the leap from first to second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or compare yourself to others who seem to manage better. However, something that assisted me was the understanding that everyone faces challenges at some point. If you’re struggling to understand something, chances are others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek help—be it from peers or staff. Mastering the skill of requesting support is one of the most valuable lessons you can learn in your first year.
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about our success and well-being, and they keep open lines of communication throughout the year. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not reaching out sooner. One step I did take early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to get acquainted with staff members and establish relationships that turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My advice? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much.
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was often misplaced. With the appropriate support systems in place, those feelings can be managed. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and it’s feasible to enjoy university life even while balancing deadlines and exams.
