Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and quite a bit of fear as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. As a first-year student, plunging into university life was a daunting undertaking—particularly for someone like me, who has always been on the quieter side. However, reflecting on the year now reveals a period brimming with growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current state?
One of the most significant and intimidating challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern you share. I vividly recall my initial day in student housing—I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too anxious to step out and meet new people. Fast forward to the present, and I can honestly say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These individuals have truly become a second family to me. What made the difference? Starting off small—striking up conversations with others who felt the same way. My main takeaway from this experience: take that initial step early. Even if you don’t feel completely ready, there are ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect. Most crucially, just be yourself. Given the diverse student body, you’re certain to find your tribe.
Another obstacle I faced was adapting to the academic demands. The transition from A-levels was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or as though you’re lagging when you observe others studying fervently. However, one thing that provided solace was the realization that everyone is navigating this together. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are in the same boat. So don’t hesitate to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is possibly the most valuable lesson I gained in my first year.
Regarding faculty, I can’t praise the teaching and support team in the Materials department enough. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One step I did take early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build connections with staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Maximize the available support—you can never have too much.
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that the anxiety and uncertainties I felt at the outset were entirely normal—and often unfounded. With the appropriate support and mindset, those feelings can be navigated. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and it’s possible to relish university life despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
