Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, uncertainty, and a hint of fear as I geared up to embark on my first year of studies in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who had typically been more introverted, plunging into university life seemed intimidating. However, reflecting on the year now, I recognize it as a period filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what have I absorbed, and what is my current state?

One of the foremost obstacles I encountered early on was the task of making friends. It’s a common concern for new students, and I was not immune. On the day I settled into my accommodation—just days before the term commenced—I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to greet anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have evolved into a second family for me. What transformed? I initiated small interactions—striking up conversations, participating in events, and just being myself. That’s one of the crucial lessons I’ve grasped: embrace your true self, and don’t shy away from taking that initial step. You’ll realize many others share your feelings, and there are numerous chances to connect.

Another significant adjustment was the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the progression from first to second term felt even more overwhelming. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others around you manage everything seemingly effortlessly. However, here’s what assisted me: remembering that everyone encounters difficulties at some stage. If you’re baffled or uncertain, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Mastering the skill of seeking support is one of the most essential abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

On the topic of support, I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and success while keeping lines of communication open throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had explored it earlier. Initially, I did take one significant step: I became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain insight into the support systems available. Getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can greatly impact your experience—they’re there to assist, and they desire to see you flourish.

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was frequently baseless. With adequate support—from both peers and faculty—those apprehensions became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and it is feasible to savor university life even amidst the challenges of exams and deadlines.
