Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by nerves, uncertainty, and anxiety about the future. I was on the brink of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in university life appeared intimidating. Yet, reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, hurdles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained in the last year, and what is my current situation?
One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered at the outset was establishing friendships. For many newcomers, this is often the most frightening aspect of entering university. I recall spending my initial day in student housing, retreating to my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I have ever experienced—individuals who feel like family. All it required was a bit of casual conversation with others who were equally uncertain. The essential lesson? Take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breaker events and social gatherings designed to help you connect. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you are sure to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.
Another significant transition was adapting to the academic demands. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was considerable, and the change from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or to compare your performance to those who appear to be managing effortlessly. However, one thing that reassured me was the knowledge that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something challenging, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—be it from peers or professors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
On the topic of support, I can’t emphasize enough how commendable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are always willing to listen to our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can truly enhance your university journey. My conclusion? Fully leverage the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that the fears and worries I held at the beginning were often exaggerated. With the appropriate support from both staff and fellow students, those feelings became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that finding happiness is achievable even during examinations and deadlines.
