Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a touch of fear as I geared up to start my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been more reserved and introverted, plunging into university life felt intimidating. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?
One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the term officially commencing—I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a few simple chats with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. What did I take away from this? That taking the first step, no matter how small, is worthwhile. If you’re not quite ready to put yourself out there, don’t fret—there are countless ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find those you resonate with.
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the subject matter. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to compare yourself to peers who seem to handle everything effortlessly. However, one of the most invaluable lessons I learned was that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are as well. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or professors. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can hone in your first year.
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are truly outstanding. They genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and success, and they keep communication channels open throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had seized that opportunity earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the available support systems. Cultivating relationships with staff members is one of the most advantageous actions you can take—it creates opportunities and makes it simpler to seek help when necessary. My principal takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources at your disposal. You can never have too much support.
In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced before and during the university’s beginning was typical—and manageable. With the right support and attitude, those fears can be conquered. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that it’s entirely possible to relish university life even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
