In October 2022, I was filled with trepidation and doubt as I geared up to commence my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Being someone with a naturally reserved personality, plunging into such an unfamiliar setting felt quite intimidating. Fast forward nearly a year, I can reflect on a path rich with growth, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was the quest to forge new friendships. This is a common concern among new students, and I was certainly no different. On the day I arrived at my accommodation—just days before classes started—I was so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to strike up a conversation with anyone. Yet, looking at where I am today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of my closest friendships. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, which all began with a handful of simple conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain.

The essential takeaway? Initiate that first move. Even if you’re feeling unprepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at facilitating connections with others. Most crucially, be true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

A further major challenge was adapting to the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university study was stark, and the shift from first to second term presented a sharper learning curve. It can be disheartening to feel like you’re lagging when it seems others are flourishing. However, one of the key realizations I had was that everyone faces struggles at some point. If you’re feeling lost or perplexed, it’s likely that others are, too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. That readiness to ask for help can truly make a difference.

Regarding staff, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and well-being. They recognize the challenges students contend with and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One proactive step I took at the outset was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are ample chances to interact with staff, and seizing those moments can significantly enrich your university journey.

In summary, this year has shown me that much of the anxiety I experienced prior to and throughout university was often unwarranted. With the appropriate backing from peers and faculty, those apprehensions can indeed be surmounted. I have come to realize that I am never truly alone, and it is feasible to enjoy university life, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
