Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of apprehension as I got ready to embark on my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. Being someone who has always been more introverted and reserved, plunging into such a substantial life transformation felt daunting. However, reflecting on the academic year now, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, hurdles, and a plethora of unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained—and what’s my current status?

One of the most significant and daunting obstacles at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern you’re grappling with. I distinctly remember spending my entire first day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone in my residence. But zoom to today, and I can sincerely say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who feel like a second family to me. It all began with brief conversations and shared experiences. The main takeaway? Embrace that leap early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

Another significant adjustment was the academic demands and the challenging nature of the course material. There was a distinct leap from A-level studies, and an even sharper incline between the first and second terms. It’s easy to become disheartened when you observe others studying and worry that you’re lagging behind. But one thing that assisted me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t shy away from seeking assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching personnel. Developing the ability to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

Speaking of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been exceptional. The lecturers and staff truly care about your achievements and well-being. They are aware of the hurdles students encounter and actively strive to provide support and maintain communication. I didn’t take full advantage of the support services available until later in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. One proactive step I took early was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with faculty members and gain a richer insight into the support systems established. Fostering these relationships has been one of the most cherished aspects of my experience. My suggestion? Fully utilize the assistance and opportunities available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive support.

In summary, this year has revealed that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was normal but often unwarranted. With the appropriate support from staff and fellow students, those emotions can be managed and conquered. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and that enjoying university life is possible even amid the strains of exams and deadlines.
