In October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and a hint of fear as I geared up for my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and quiet, plunging into university life seemed intimidating. Reflecting on the past ten months now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and remarkable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current status?
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. For numerous newcomers, this aspect of starting university can be quite frightening. I recall spending my whole first day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. But fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who feel like my second family. What contributed to this? Simply initiating conversations with other newcomers who were equally nervous and uncertain. The essential lesson? Don’t hesitate to take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections. And above all, be genuine—Imperial is diverse, and you’re sure to find your community.
Another significant adjustment was the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to second term was even more profound. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others studying. However, one thing that aided me was the realization that everyone else is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely others are too. Don’t shy away from seeking help—be it from your classmates or faculty members. Learning to request assistance is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely prioritize student wellbeing and foster open communication year-round. Although I didn’t utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. One proactive step I took at the beginning was becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are various opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much help.
In summary, this year has shown me that the nerves and apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—were completely normal, albeit often unwarranted. With the backing of peers, faculty, and the broader university network, I learned that I was never alone. Furthermore, I discovered how to truly enjoy my time, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
