In October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a good deal of fear as I geared up to start my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. Having always been somewhat of an introvert, plunging into an entirely new setting felt intimidating. Yet now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights did I gain, and what is my current status?

One of the most daunting challenges I confronted initially was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my first day at the student housing retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. But fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—individuals who truly feel like a second family. What was the key? Simply initiating conversations with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was. My most significant takeaway from this experience: take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel quite ready, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings that can aid in making connections. And above all, remain authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to locate individuals who align with your interests and values.

Another significant adjustment was the academic demands. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with confidence. However, one thing that truly aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

On the topic of support, I cannot emphasize enough the positive impact of the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student well-being and are always receptive to feedback and communication. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support options available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members. That experience was immensely fulfilling, and I strongly encourage you to get involved in similar roles if possible. The support is available—make use of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety and uncertainties I faced at the start were typical but often unwarranted. With the backing of peers and staff, I realized that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to harmonize academic challenges with enjoyment and personal development. University can be tough, but it’s equally a space where you can flourish—if you’re prepared to make that initial move.
