Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and quite a bit of fear. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been rather shy and introverted, plunging into university life felt intimidating. However, reflecting on the past academic year now, I recognize a journey of personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what lessons have I taken away, and where do I find myself today?

One of the most significant and daunting obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my initial day in student housing isolating myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. But fast forward to now, and I can sincerely say I’ve formed some incredibly close friendships—people who feel like an extended family. It all began with simple conversations and shared experiences. What I’ve realized is that taking that first step is truly rewarding. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings intended to facilitate connections with others. And above all, be true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands. The transition from A-levels was substantial, and the move from the first to the second term was even more abrupt. It’s simple to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study with confidence. But here’s the reality: everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. This underscores the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your peers or instructors, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Learning to seek support is one of the essential skills you can cultivate during your initial year.

Speaking of support, I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful the staff in the Materials department are. They are genuinely invested in our success and well-being. They comprehend the pressures we experience and are always receptive to feedback and communication. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later on in the year, and I wish I had started earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the support resources available. Cultivating those connections has proven invaluable, and I encourage every student to make the most of the assistance that is provided—you can never have an excess of support.

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even during my time here—was natural but often unwarranted. There are countless resources and individuals ready to assist. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and it is entirely possible to savor university life, even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
