Reflecting on October 2022, I remember feeling anxious, uncertain, and overwhelmed as I got ready to embark on my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and reserved, plunging into university life felt intimidating. However, now, nearly a year later, I can assertively say that this journey has been marked by growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what have I discovered, and where stand I now?
One of the primary obstacles I encountered early was the quest to make friendships. This is a common concern for many newcomers, and I was no different. On the day I arrived at my accommodation—just a few days ahead of the term—I was so filled with anxiety that I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become akin to a second family for me. What shifted? It all began with small interactions and shared moments. I discovered that taking that initial step, even if it’s merely saying hello, can foster meaningful connections. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best way to attract people who truly resonate with you. With such a diverse community at Imperial, there’s a space for everyone.
Academically, transitioning from A-levels to university-level studies was another considerable challenge. The volume of work escalated, and the topics grew increasingly complex—especially when shifting from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel engulfed or to measure oneself against peers who appear to be coping better. Yet, one of the most crucial lessons I learned was that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re having difficulties grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. This highlights why seeking help is so vital. Whether from fellow students or the teaching staff, reaching out can make a significant impact.
Speaking of staff, I can’t express enough how much support I’ve received from the Materials department. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely care about our achievements and well-being. They’re approachable, empathetic, and proactive in addressing student issues. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had recognized its value sooner. Early on, I took the initiative and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff members and gain a deeper understanding of the support systems available. Getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is extremely advantageous, and I highly endorse this for anyone beginning their journey.
In reflecting on the entire year, I’ve realized that many of the worries I held were baseless. With the appropriate support—from both the staff and fellow students—those anxious feelings can diminish. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and that it’s possible to relish university life even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has taught me resilience, the importance of community, and the necessity of seizing opportunities—even when they initially feel daunting. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, take that leap. Be authentic. Seek assistance. And most importantly, savor the experience.
