Reflecting on October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and a considerable degree of fear. I was on the verge of commencing my first year of Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the idea of immersing myself in university life felt intimidating—especially for someone like me, who has always been quite introverted. Now, as I look back over the past ten months, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
A significant and daunting challenge at the outset was forging friendships. For prospective students, this may also be a primary concern. I can recall my first day in student housing, where I stayed confined in my room, too anxious to meet anyone. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life—companions who feel like family. It all commenced with a little casual conversation and the bravery to step beyond my comfort zone. What I’ve discovered is this: take the plunge early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are countless ice-breakers and social gatherings to help you mingle. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or to compare yourself to peers who appear to manage seamlessly. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating their own challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most important lesson I learned in my first year? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, support is always at hand—you just have to ask.
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly prioritize the well-being and achievements of their students and are consistently receptive to feedback and communication. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the beginning, I took an initiative and became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge closer ties with the faculty. That relationship turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to establish connections with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.
All in all, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even during my studies—was frequently unfounded. Thanks to the backing of fellow students and staff, those emotions became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and it’s entirely possible to relish university life even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
