Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and quite a bit of fear. I was about to embark on my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the prospect of immersing myself in such a new and unfamiliar setting was intimidating—particularly for someone who had always leaned towards being more reserved. Fast forward ten months, I reflect on a year that has been brimming with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this is often one of the most anxiety-provoking parts of starting university. I recall spending my initial full day in student housing locked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. But now, I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced—many with fellow coursemates and others from across the university. It turns out that all it required was a little small talk and the bravery to say hello. My key takeaway? Take that leap early. Even if it feels awkward initially, there are ample icebreaker events and avenues to connect with others in a similar situation. Above all, be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find people you relate to.

Another hurdle was getting used to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty compared to A-levels. The shift from the first to the second term was especially evident. It’s easy to feel engulfed by the pressure or to compare yourself with peers who appear to handle things more easily. But one of the most crucial lessons I learned was that everyone faces difficulties at some point. If you’re feeling lost or stuck, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. Reaching out for support is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

Speaking of support, I can’t emphasize enough the fantastic staff in the Materials department. They genuinely prioritize our success and well-being, and they make a significant effort to engage with students throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later on, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster relationships with staff members. That experience was immensely rewarding and helped me feel more integrated into the department. There are numerous ways to connect with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can truly elevate your university journey. The main takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to accept help—there’s no such thing as excessive support.

Overall, this past year has shown me that the nerves and uncertainties I felt at the outset were natural—but not permanent. With the right support and perspective, they can be overcome. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that it’s absolutely feasible to enjoy university life while managing exams and deadlines. It has been a transformative experience, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead.
