Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and quite a bit of apprehension as I got ready to embark on my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been rather introverted and reserved, plunging into university life felt intimidating. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a path marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might also be a concern for you. I recall my first day in student accommodation spent hiding in my room, too anxious to make introductions. But fast forward to now, I can confidently claim that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I could ever hope for—individuals I now regard as a second family. It all began with simple conversations and shared moments. My main takeaway? Take that initial plunge. Even if uncertainty looms, there will be countless opportunities—ice-breakers, events, and casual discussions—that will aid you in connecting with others. And most crucially, be genuine. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
Another significant adjustment was the academic demands and the intricacy of the course material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first to the second term was particularly intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or to compare yourself with peers and feel as though you’re lagging behind. Yet, one thing that aided me was reminding myself that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, chances are others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire in your first year.
Speaking of support, I can’t express enough how positive my experiences with the staff in the Materials department have been. They sincerely prioritize student well-being and are consistently receptive to feedback and dialogue. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the later part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the beginning, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a greater understanding of the resources at my disposal. Developing relationships with staff members has been tremendously advantageous, and I urge every student to pursue similar connections. The support is available—don’t hesitate to take advantage of it.
In sum, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during the early university days was common—but also manageable. With the right support and attitude, those fears can be surmounted. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and that enjoying university life is possible even amid the challenges of exams and deadlines.
