Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering Studies

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and a considerable degree of fear. I was about to embark on my first year of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been relatively shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey of personal development, challenges faced, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be a primary concern for you as well. I recall my first day moving into my university accommodation—I spent the whole day in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. But fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with a few casual conversations with individuals who were just as new and uncertain as I was.

The essential lesson? Take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. And above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find people you resonate with.

Another significant adjustment was the academic demands and the intricacy of the subjects. The leap from A-levels was palpable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or to compare yourself to others who appear to have everything under control. But one thing that aided me was the reassurance that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—this is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year. Connect with your classmates, and don’t shy away from approaching the faculty.

Regarding the faculty, the academic and pastoral support offered within the Department of Materials is outstanding. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback and communication. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One significant step I took early on was becoming a Year Wellbeing Representative. This position allowed me to establish rapport with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage and connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxieties and uncertainties I experienced prior to starting university were normal but often baseless. With the appropriate support and mindset, those emotions can be managed. I’ve realized that I’m never truly solitary, and that enjoying university life is indeed possible—even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
