**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my first year delving into [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I now recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered was the task of developing friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might also be a concern for you. On my first day at student housing, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. However, I can now proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has truly become a second home, and all it required was for me to step outside my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were feeling similarly.

What did I discover? Taking that first leap is always worthwhile. Even if you believe you aren’t ready, don’t fret—there are countless icebreaker activities and social functions designed to facilitate connections with others. Most significantly, be authentic. With such a multifaceted student population, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another critical obstacle was acclimatizing to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was particularly challenging. It’s easy to become daunted or question your skills when observing peers studying with assurance. Nonetheless, I came to understand that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well.

My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is one of the key abilities to cultivate during your first year. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff, seeking help can dramatically enhance your academic experience.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most beneficial elements of my first year was the exceptional support provided by the teaching staff. The faculty within the Materials department truly wishes for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They appreciate the hurdles we encounter and actively endeavor to assist us.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Early on, I seized the opportunity to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to connect with the teaching staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support that is offered—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to commencing university were unfounded. There is abundant support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid in navigating the complexities of university life. I’ve grasped that I am never genuinely alone and that it is entirely feasible to balance academic responsibilities with enjoyment and fulfillment.

If you are about to embark on your university journey, my succinct piece of advice is: welcome the experience, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every chance to connect with others. You will be astonished at your growth in merely one year.
