### Insights from My Initial Year of Studying Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, and venturing into the unknown was far from familiar for my previously shy and reserved self. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A significant challenge I encountered at the start was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in the student residence, just before classes began, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can boldly state that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some light conversations with others who were navigating similar situations.

So, what lessons have I picked up? First, it’s always beneficial to take that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the best approach is to be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.

#### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The shift from A-levels was striking, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed, especially when you notice others studying and start to question your own skills.

What helped me persevere through this was realizing that everyone faces struggles at some point. If you’re having difficulty understanding a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or professors. This was perhaps the most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year.

#### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Care

Speaking of faculty, one of the finest elements of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the supportive staff. The professors genuinely aspire for their students to succeed and are consistently open to discussing any concerns. They are aware of the difficulties we encounter and maintain transparent communication throughout the academic year.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous pathways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey.

My most significant insight? Take full advantage of the available support. There’s no such thing as obtaining too much help!

#### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. There are numerous support systems established, ranging from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to face challenges alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned the art of balancing academic pressures while savoring life at university.

If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
