**Insights from My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, doubt, and enthusiasm as I prepared to embark on my inaugural year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been more introverted, transitioning into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Fear of Friendship

A significant challenge I encountered early on was the quest for friendship. For any prospective student, this may resonate as a concern. I recall my inaugural day in student housing, where I found myself retreating to my room, too daunted to reach out to others. Nevertheless, as the year unfolded, I cultivated some of the strongest bonds I’ve ever formed.

The essential takeaway? Be courageous. Although you may feel reluctant at the outset, there will be ample ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Most critically, stay true to yourself—Imperial boasts a vibrant array of individuals, and you are certain to discover those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

The transition from A-level studies to university coursework posed another considerable obstacle. The workload was demanding, and the challenges amplified in the second term. There were moments when I questioned my ability to keep pace, particularly as I observed others studying with assurance.

What assisted me during this time? Realizing that I was not alone in my struggles. If you find a concept bewildering, it’s likely that others do as well. The best approach is to seek assistance—either from classmates or instructors. Learning to pursue help early in your academic journey is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

A comforting aspect of my journey was the remarkable support I received from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritize students’ welfare and are always receptive to input. Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner.

Assuming the role of a well-being representative enabled me to forge connections with faculty, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much help.

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has imparted the lesson that many of my pre-university anxieties were unfounded. Support is perpetually accessible, whether from staff or fellow students. Most crucially, I have learned to balance academic demands with enjoyment, making the most of my time at Imperial.

If you are on the brink of starting university and feeling apprehensive, remember that you are not alone. Embrace the challenges, reach out for support when necessary, and permit yourself to evolve. The adventure is just beginning, and it is certainly one worth pursuing.
