**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Transitioning from a once-timid individual, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant obstacle I encountered initially was the challenge of meeting people. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate with your concerns as well. On my first day moving into my residence, I was so daunted that I spent the entire time in my room, too anxious to reach out to anyone. However, as I reflect today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others facing similar feelings.
What have I come to understand? Taking that initial step is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse student population, you’re certain to encounter those who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others working diligently. Nevertheless, one of the most crucial lessons I gained was that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you’re finding a concept difficult, it’s likely that others are too.
The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is one of the most essential skills to refine in your initial year. Whether it involves reaching out to classmates or consulting with professors, always feel free to ask questions.
### The Value of Staff Support
One aspect that truly impressed me was the tremendous support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always ready to assist. They recognize the challenges we encounter, maintaining open lines of communication throughout the year.
Although I didn’t completely utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Leverage the available support—you can never have too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
This year has enlightened me to the reality that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unfounded. With adequate backing from both staff and fellow students, those worries became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to navigate academic demands while enjoying the university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your university journey and feeling apprehensive, understand that it’s entirely normal. Embrace the forthcoming opportunities, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, relish the journey!
