**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was the quest to make friends. If you are an incoming student, this may also be a concern for you. On my inaugural day at the student residence, just prior to the term commencing, I spent an entire day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I am pleased to state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life—both within my course and throughout the university. Imperial has evolved into a second home, and all it required was pushing past my comfort zone to engage in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
The vital takeaway? Take that initial step early on. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and heightened difficulty of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more pronounced shift from the first to the second term. It’s easy to become overwhelmed, particularly when observing others study and beginning to question your own capabilities.
What aided me in persevering was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The most beneficial action you can take is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most valuable insights gained in the first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They earnestly want students to excel and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, ensuring that our issues were acknowledged.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous paths to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My greatest insight? Utilize the support provided to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has illuminated that the apprehensions and worries I had prior to beginning university were mostly unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with enjoyment.
For anyone poised to commence their university adventure: welcome the challenges, seek help when necessary, and above all, permit yourself to grow. It’s a journey that is truly worthwhile.
