**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase of my life felt like a daunting challenge. Reflecting now, I realize that I have experienced a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Apprehension of Forming Friendships
A prominent challenge I confronted at the outset of university was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also weigh on your mind. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Nonetheless, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The crucial lesson I discovered? Take the initiative early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and complexity. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap from the first to second term proved even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed, particularly when you observe others studying and start to question your own capabilities.
What assisted me during this time was the realization that everyone shares this experience. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take in your first year is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members.
### The Importance of Seeking Assistance
On the topic of professors, one of the most precious aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support from the teaching staff. They genuinely aim for students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they kept open lines of communication with us, ensuring our concerns were acknowledged.
I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not embracing it sooner. Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to establish connections with staff. Familiarizing yourself with your professors can be incredibly advantageous, and there are numerous ways to achieve this. My principal takeaway? Make the most of the support accessible—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
As I look back, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before beginning university was unfounded. An abundance of support exists from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I am never isolated and that it’s feasible to reconcile academic difficulties with a fulfilling university experience.
To anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure: welcome the uncertainty, take the plunge, and seize every chance available. You will evolve in ways you never anticipated.
