### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and priceless experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A significant obstacle I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate with you as a top concern. I vividly recall my first day settling into student accommodation—so daunted by the thought of meeting new faces that I spent the entire day cloistered in my room.
However, looking at where I am now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most treasured friendships in my life. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it simply required me to step outside my comfort zone and initiate simple conversations with those in similar positions.
What did I glean from this experience? That first step is always worthwhile. If you find yourself anxious or uncertain, don’t fret—plenty of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others are on the horizon. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied student body, you are sure to discover kindred spirits.
#### Navigating the Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your abilities, especially when you observe peers studying and grasping concepts more swiftly.
What guided me through this was the realization that I wasn’t in this alone. If I struggled with a subject, it’s likely others did as well. The important takeaway? Seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
#### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most rewarding aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support from faculty. They sincerely want students to thrive and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
At first, I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available to me, and I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the fears and anxieties I harbored before entering university were often misplaced. With the right support—from both faculty and fellow students—those apprehensions became manageable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never alone, and it’s feasible to balance academic demands with a fulfilling university life.
To anyone on the verge of starting their journey at Imperial: embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ve got this!
