**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial, and facing the unknown felt daunting for someone who had always been introverted and reserved. In hindsight, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and much enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was building connections. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall my introductory day moving into my accommodation—I was so daunted that I confined myself to my room the entire day, too apprehensive to meet anyone.

Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it simply required me to step beyond my familiar boundaries and initiate conversations with others who were equally new to this experience.

So, what’s the lesson? That initial leap is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and opportunities to connect with others. Most crucially, be authentic—Imperial is home to a myriad of unique individuals, and you’re sure to find companions who resonate with you.

### Adapting to the Academic Landscape

Another major challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more profound. At times, it was easy to feel swamped and question my capabilities, particularly when observing classmates who seemed more assured.

Nevertheless, I soon recognized that I wasn’t the only one—many of my peers were grappling with similar difficulties. The best strategy to tackle this? Seek assistance. Whether from peers or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your initial year.

### The Value of Finding Support

One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the remarkable assistance from the faculty. They genuinely want their students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, acknowledging our challenges and providing direction.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, but in retrospect, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort, which enabled me to connect with faculty members. Building relationships with your professors and support staff can be tremendously advantageous, and I strongly encourage everyone to leverage the resources at their disposal.

### Important Lessons from My First Year

As I reflect on my inaugural year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during my university journey—was frequently unwarranted. There are abundant support mechanisms in place, ranging from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in navigating any hurdles. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone and that maintaining a balance between academic demands and a fulfilling university life is entirely achievable.

If you’re about to embark on your adventure at Imperial, my counsel is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace each opportunity that arises. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about an amazing first year.
