**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. As a first-year student on the brink of commencing my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself venturing into uncharted waters. Having always been someone who kept to myself, embarking on this new journey was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the time that has passed, I observe a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early in the year was the quest to make friends. If you’re a future student, this may also be a significant worry for you. On my first day in student housing, I felt so apprehensive that I remained in my room for the entire day, too shy to introduce myself to anyone. Nevertheless, as time went on, I found myself creating lasting friendships with peers from my course and beyond. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends of my life during my time at university.

So, what have I taken away from this? First, taking that initial step is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others await. Second, the most beneficial approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re likely to meet individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the academic intensity and demands. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I felt inundated and questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying effectively.

What assisted me during this process? It was the reminder that I was not alone. If I found a concept challenging, it was probable that others were experiencing the same. The secret was to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to seek help became one of the most significant lessons of my first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of support, the teaching staff within the Materials department were outstanding. They genuinely cared about students’ success and were always ready to talk about any challenges we encountered. Although I didn’t make the most of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the start of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that is available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that many of my initial apprehensions were unfounded. Whether it was befriending others, managing academic stress, or reaching out for help, I learned that I was never truly isolated. University serves as a space for development, and with the right attitude and support, it’s feasible to navigate both challenges and enjoyment.

If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You might be amazed at how much you change throughout the journey.
