**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unknown was a departure from what my previously introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a pressing concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet new people. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve found some of the most amazing friends of my life.
Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and it all began with a little small talk with others experiencing the same feelings. My key takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be many ice-breaker activities and events aimed at helping you connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is brimming with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to encounter those who share your passions.
### Adapting to the Academic Landscape
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and increased complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite stark, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, I found myself questioning my abilities, particularly when I saw peers engrossed in their studies and felt that I was falling behind.
What enabled me to persevere was the realization that everyone was grappling with similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Developing the ability to seek support is one of the most crucial skills you can hone during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and recognize the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, ensuring our voices were heard.
While I didn’t fully tap into pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of my best choices was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Closing Thoughts
Looking back, this year has shown me that the nerves before university are often unfounded and that support is always accessible, whether it comes from staff or fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is possible even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
For anyone on the verge of embarking on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, don’t hesitate to ask for help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll develop in ways you never imagined, and before you know it, you’ll be reflecting on an unforgettable year.
