### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with nerves, uncertainty, and anticipation as I geared up to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unfamiliar was intimidating, particularly for someone who has always been somewhat introverted. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, academic trials, and lasting memories. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the beginning of my university experience was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I spent the full day in my room, steering clear of social interactions. However, fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

What’s the essential lesson I learned? Make that initial move. Even if you feel reluctant, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-level studies to university-level coursework posed another significant challenge. The workload increased significantly, and the complexity of the material escalated, particularly between the first and second terms. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I noticed others studying diligently and grasping concepts more swiftly than I could.

What enabled me to persevere was realizing that I wasn’t isolated—many peers were encountering the same difficulties. If something is unclear, chances are others are in the same boat. The best approach is to seek assistance, whether from classmates or instructors. Developing the ability to ask for help is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the subject of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are consistently willing to address our concerns. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be an excellent choice, as becoming acquainted with the staff can be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with professors and support resources, and I wholeheartedly recommend utilizing them. The more assistance you pursue, the more enriching your experience will be.

#### Major Lessons from My First Year

Reflecting on my journey, my first year has shown me that many of the anxieties I had before entering university were unfounded. A plethora of support is available, both from staff and fellow students, to help navigate the complexities of university life. I have discovered that I am never genuinely alone and that it is feasible to manage academic demands alongside an enjoyable and rewarding student experience.

For anyone preparing to commence their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take the plunge, and capitalize on the opportunities surrounding you. It’s a year of development, learning, and unforgettable experiences.
